ReUNION!

Local 6996 has formed a Women's Committee that is committed to increasing the participation of women and raising the consciousness of women and empowering them to mobilize the Union to support issues of concern to women, such as racial & sexual harassment, domestic violence, balancing work and family and pay equity.  We are also committed to educate and work with the male membership on understanding women's issues and perspectives.

The Women's Committee works hand-in-hand with the other Committees of the Local to address any issues that women bring to our Committee (i.e. Civil Rights, Community Services, Safety & Health and Work Comp).  We provide a safe environment for women to discuss the issues that are of concern.  Everything discussed is totally confidential.

According to a report from the international agency UNESCO, women perform two-thirds of the world's work, head one-third of the world's households, yet earn only one-tenth of the world's income, and own only one-tenth of the world's property.  United States Department of Labor statistics report that women workers make up sixty percent of new workers each year, account for more than fifty percent of the labor force, represent sixty percent of new unionists, and thirty-eight percent of union membership nationally.  In addition, the fastest growing sectors of the labor market today are predominantly and traditionally female.  Unions need not just a few more women members, organizers and accomplished women leaders, but many more women, ordinary and extraordinary, at all levels of leadership.  Women we see as role models today were just workers, concerned citizens and unionists when they began their journey, which has left a mark on history.  Your mark on history has already begun...

If you are a woman and a member of Local 6996 and would like to join the Women's Committee, would like more information, or have an issue to discuss, please call the office at (610)375-3355 and ask to speak to Barbara Diehl, Woman's Committee Chairperson.  You can also email at usw6996@epix.net.
